Ask Yourself These 4 Questions

Here are a few things you can cross of the list right now! Being able to answer “Yes” to each of these questions is the first step to becoming a foster parent:

  1. Am I 21 or older?
  2. Do I have reliable transportation?
  3. Is my home a safe environment with enough space for another child (a separate bed for each child)?
  4. Do I agree to positive parenting techniques and non-physical discipline for children?

Are You Able to Meet These Criteria?

Complete Background Checks

You and everyone in your household must undergo a background check to ensure a child’s safety. You must also meet West Virginia’s Child Placing Regulations regarding a safe and healthy home environment.

Are you willing to complete the required foster parent training?

West Virginia now uses the National Training and Development Curriculum (NTDC) instead of the previous PRIDE model. NTDC is a 10-week, trauma-informed training program designed to help you understand trauma, strengthen caregiving skills, and prepare for welcoming a child or teen into your home.

All prospective foster parents must complete NTDC, along with additional required courses such as CPR/First Aid and MANDT (Crisis Prevention & De-Escalation). Together, these trainings help you build confidence, learn practical skills, and decide whether fostering is the right fit for you and your family.
