Academic Support for Youth in Foster Care
Academic Support and Mentorship for Youth in Foster Care
At KVC West Virginia, we believe education has the power to change lives. That’s why we’re dedicated to providing academic support for youth in foster care. With over 20 years of experience in child welfare and mental health, we’re here to help children and teens overcome the challenges that often get in the way of their success.
Education is crucial for a bright future, but youth in foster care face unique obstacles that can make it harder to stay on track. To help them succeed, we’ve created programs that guide them through school, prepare them for college or vocational training, help them enter the workforce, and build the confidence they need to thrive.
Challenges Youth in Foster Care Face
Youth in foster care often experience big changes in their lives, like moving to new homes and switching schools. These moves can make it hard to keep up with schoolwork, make friends, or feel connected. Data shows that each time a student changes schools, they can lose 4-6 months of education. Some may even struggle with feelings of stress or uncertainty because of their experiences before or during their time in foster care.
Without support, these challenges can make it harder for youth to graduate high school or plan for their future. In West Virginia, about one-third of youth exit foster care without a high school diploma, which makes it harder to get a job or go to college. KVC West Virginia is working to change this statistic by creating programs that give youth the skills, knowledge and mentors they need to achieve their dreams.

EDIFY: Academic Support for Elementary and Middle School Students in Foster Care
EDIFY is a program designed to help students in grades 3–7 (ages 9–13) build the skills they need to succeed in school and navigate life’s challenges. This program provides personalized support, including tutoring, mentoring, and coaching, to help young people reach their full potential. Through EDIFY, students learn how to set goals, speak up for themselves, and stay focused on their education. These skills not only help them do well in school but also prepare them for success in the future.
What makes EDIFY stand out? The program is led by college students who have experienced foster care themselves. These mentors understand the unique challenges foster youth face and can provide guidance and encouragement in a way that truly connects with the students.
First Star Academy: Academic Support for High School Students in Foster Care
KVC’s First Star Academy is a program for students in grades 8–12 that helps them succeed in school and prepare for the future. The program offers personalized help with schoolwork, mental health support, tutoring, career exploration and life skills training. So far, 100% of students in KVC’s First Star Academy have graduated high school.
A key part of the program are the Saturday academies held each month. These sessions include hands-on activities that teach important life skills and help students explore different careers. Another highlight is a two-week summer experience at Fairmont State University and Experience Learning. During this time, students learn about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers through interactive activities. They also explore what it’s like to be in college and receive social and emotional support.
Middle College at Fairmont State University
Middle College at Fairmont State University is a unique program for older teens in foster care (ages 16+). This program empowers students to earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree at the same time. Students live on campus year-round, take college-level courses, and participate in campus life. With full financial support for tuition, fees and living expenses, youth can focus on their success and future. The program is designed to help students excel academically and develop skills for their future careers.
KVC West Virginia provides 24/7 supervision, mental health support, and specialized activities to help students grow socially and emotionally. With the guidance of KVC’s and Fairmont State’s dedicated team, students will graduate prepared to pursue a bachelor’s degree, begin vocational training, or enter the workforce.
